Klaipeda Puppet Theatre is organizing the 9th Puppet Theatre Festival which will be held on the 25th-28th of May, 2017 in Klaipeda, Lithuania. It is the only professional and international visual theatre festival in Western Lithuania. Born in the young and creative minds of puppet theatre students of the Klaipeda University back in 1997, in the years it has grown into an open and diverse platform for native and foreign artists to present their creative work, as well as a vibrant meeting-point to get in touch with colleagues from other countries, theatres, and schools to share their knowledge, experience, and ideas about possible collaborative projects.
2017 is the time for changes for us – having been known as “Karakumų asilėlis” (en. Karakum Donkey) for years the festival is changing its outfit and putting on the new name of MATERIA MAGICA – a combination of words that apart from having this hint of ages-old secret, conveys the very nature of puppet theatre: the coming into life, the promise of vitality rooted in every object that is waiting to be animated by a puppeteer, and the magic material that could transform itself into whatever it wants. MATERIA MAGICA invites you to enter the puzzling, enchanting and inspiring magic cube.
The festival aims at presenting and promoting puppet theatre in its diversity and originality, crossing age and language borders, combining tradition with new wave, its interdisciplinary nature with the depth of pure forms. Every second year it invites renowned and brave theatre groups and independent artists from different countries to share their works, creative vibes and artistic explorations with Lithuanian and guest audience. Apart from theatre shows the festival will present film screenings, workshops, street events. Hopefully, and we’re very optimistic about that, it will continue to be an open platform for informal interaction, making new connections, and planning future projects. So we say: BE CALM. PUPPET ON. And come to Klaipeda.
